Paisley Pixie here with some advice and tips for NaNoWriMo contestants..

Hello all- I’m here to give some simple advice before the insanity begins in just 5 days!

Is it possible to write a novel of 50,000 words in just 30 days? Of course it is! With a few goals in mind and some planning before Nov. 1st, you can easily finish the 50,000 word limit:

1. Figure out what genre you want to write in. I would suggest one that you are comfortable with and have done before. I will be writing in the fantasy genre because that is my best subject. I’m not saying you have to do a genre that you work with more; but it’s a suggestion.

 2. Research and plan. Brainstorm on scratch paper. If your novel takes place in a certain time period or certain culture, research it. I can’t stress that enough… even though it will all be fictional, readers still want to see the accuracy when it comes to how the people lived in that time, what they ate, etc...

3. Character sheets. Make a small outline of each (important) character. Include their name, purpose in the novel (protagonist, antagonist, other..), personality, age, appearance description, and so on. Strictly for your main characters. I wouldn’t make a character sheet for every single character because let’s face it: That could take up more time than writing the novel itself. LoL.

4.Figure out your plot. What do you want to happen? Write down a summary of the plot.

5.Think of your setting. Is it a “made-up” land/world? If so, what is life like there? You could write down names of places you will be using-or you can even draw out a map for your notes.

6.Don’t get discouraged! 50,000 words in a month can be pretty overwhelming, but just remember that it’s all in fun. If you set a goal of writing an average of 2,000-2,500 words a day, you’ll be on a great track to completing.

And last, but certainly not least:

HAVE FUN!!!
